Geshe Lama Ahbay Rinpoche was born in Darjeeling, India. When he was 9 years old, he was fully initiated into monkshood, and at 12, His Holiness the Dalai Lama identified him as the reincarnation of the hermit Lama Lobsang Tenzin, who lived in a cave and was famous for his supernatural powers. As a hermit, the animals of the forest, deer and monkeys would come to him and people from all walks of life would seek him out for blessing.

Rinpoche is head of the Gaden Jangtse Monastery in southern India, as well as Yega Choling Monastery in Tibet (China), which was founded by his previous incarnation.
